Frequently Asked Questions
An ignition interlock device is a small in-vehicle system that measures your breath alcohol content (BrAC). If your BrAC is above the allowed limit, the device prevents the vehicle from starting.
The IID is connected to your vehicle’s ignition system. Before starting your car, you must blow into the mouthpiece. If your breath sample is alcohol-free or below the preset limit, the engine will start. If not, it stays locked.
Rinse your mouth with water, then provide a clean breath sample into the device. If your BrAC is within the limit, you can start the vehicle. While driving, the device may prompt random retests to ensure continued sobriety.
If you fail a test before starting the vehicle, the engine will remain locked. You may have to wait before retrying. Multiple failed attempts can result in a lockout, requiring you to return for service.
Yes. Products like mouthwash, hand sanitizer, and certain medications contain alcohol and can cause false fails. Avoid using them before testing or rinse with water and wait at least 10 to 15 minutes.
In some states, it is possible to install an IID on a motorcycle. Contact us to check availability and eligibility in your state.
No. If you fail or miss a rolling retest, the engine will not shut off. However, the device will log the violation and may activate alarms such as flashing lights or a horn to alert the driver.
Most devices allow a short window to restart the car without a new breath test if it stalls. If the restart window passes, you will be prompted to take another test before starting.
Yes. Any licensed driver can operate the vehicle but must provide a breath sample. As the program participant, you are responsible for all activity and violations recorded by the device.
No. Only someone who provides a valid breath sample can start the car. Having someone else blow into the device for you is considered tampering and may lead to violations or program removal.
Inform your mechanic that an IID is installed. They may contact the service provider for a temporary service mode. Always notify Pitstop before having repairs done to ensure compliance.
Any breath alcohol concentration over the preset limit, typically around 0.02%, will result in a fail. It is safest to avoid consuming any alcohol while using the device.
The required installation period depends on your state and offense history. It usually ranges from six months to over a year.
Yes. Certain violations such as missed tests or failed retests can trigger a reset in your countdown or require early servicing. This may delay completion of your program.
Review the report, identify possible causes, and avoid repeating the behavior. Contact Pitstop Interlock to schedule servicing if necessary and follow all requirements to remain compliant.
Devices are calibrated regularly, usually every 30 to 90 days. During calibration, technicians test the sensor and download usage data to ensure accuracy.
The device should power on, respond to inputs, and provide clear messages. You should be able to pass tests without issues, and receive reminders about upcoming service or maintenance dates.
